‘Did you know that in the early days all chair seating cane had to be prepared by hand? In the area round High Wycombe where a chair making industry was developing the women and children did the ‘bottoming’, while the men had to split and shave the glossy material for their task. The men were known as ‘Makers Off’. The waste, which was considerable, used to be discarded directly outside their dwellings where it accumulated causing obstruction to the primitive drainage arrangements of the time…’
