Makers

Jane Stevenson

20 Beauley Road, Southville, Bristol, BS3 1PY Biography

I made my first basket with Sarah Jayne Edwards in autumn 2022. Because she was so encouraging, I took a few more workshops with Sarah Woodrow. And then, because she was so encouraging, I enrolled for the Level 2 City & Guilds course in Creative Basketry at Westhope College, finishing with distinction in summer 2025.

I am still very much learning – as I know all basketmakers always are. I love sculptural baskets and am interested in exploring that point where the design of a basket means that it is (only just) practical enough to still be useful. But I also make practical things too.

I am part of a willow growing cooperative in Bristol, so much of my work has very low willow miles. Having been involved in environmental campaigns for many years, I’m particularly keen on keeping the craft as sustainable as possible. I like the fact that duffers can always be composted!
