Candide Simard
BiographyI weave with pine needles, a craft more often seen in North America, but I learned it when I lived in Fiji!
I am now back in the UK and I have found generous trees with long needles so I can continue making baskets and ornaments.
Weaving with pine needles is an ancient craft, it involves coiling and stitching rows upon rows of needles. It is easy to create intricate patterns by varying stitches, or adding beads. I also like incorporating shells, driftwood, seeds, anothing collected from nature. I'm learning pottery and like mixing clay and pine needles, the two talked to each other nicely.
It is a slow, meditative craft that fosters both creativity and a sense of calm.
I run workshops and make baskets on commission.
