The Cane Workshop, 1 Stokoe House, Alston, Cumbria, CA9 3HS Biography

The Cane Workshop is located in the historic market town of Alston, Cumbria, located in the North Pennines, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Alston is ideally located to be used as a base to visit the Yorkshire Dales, Northumbria, Hadrian's Wall and a wealth of other places.

"Making things is my absolute passion and after five years caning as a hobby, I decided to turn it into a business. I cane in the traditional way and only use natural rattan cane. My background has always been in art and craft, and I have a BA(Hons) in Fine Art-Sculpture, from Wimbledon School Of Art.

In 2025 I was featured on BBC Antiques Road Trip, where I showed Phil Serrell & Natasha Raskin Sharp how to chaircane, and discussed it's heritage.

"I'm based in the beautiful market town of Alston, Cumbria, allegedly the highest market town in England! The Cane Workshop itself is located in Stokoe House right next to the Market Cross in the center of the town. Stokoe House is a three-storey shop dating back to 1611 and is worth a visit alone!"
