Straw Christmas decoration workshop

By Ministry of Straw
-
Cumnor Old School, High Street, Cumnor, Oxford OX2 9PE

During the workshop you will learn about the wonderful world of straw! Ceremonies connected with the harvest of crops have been practiced for centuries all over the world and many different varieties of the corn dolly have been developed. The corn dolly is considered to be the resting place of the spirit of corn after the crop is cut, held in reverence until the following year, when a new one is made, thus ensuring the fertility and continuity of the harvest.

After a short introduction to preparing the straw , your tutor Penny, will teach you some traditional straw plaiting techniques to use to make some small festive decorations. There will be an opportunity to embellish them, so everyone will be unique! You will also learn how to make a small woven reindeer. These make wonderful personal Christmas presents……. or keep them for yourself!

This workshop is suitable for aged anyone 16 plus, 16-18 year olds will need to be accompanied by a paid participating adult. Suitable for beginners and those who have worked with straw before, some hand dexterity is required. All materials used in the workshop are included in the price.

Cumnor Old School is a large and airy venue with an onsite car park. Please bring your own refreshments to the workshop.
