50th anniversary talk – Mary Butcher MBE and Tim Johnson in conversation
£5.00
Mary Butcher, originally a zoologist, trained with basketmaker Alwyne Hawkins in Kent, making functional items from willow and rush. A fellowship at Manchester Metropolitan University and a V&A residency inspired her to explore new materials like recycled plastics, wire and paper. Named a Craft Skills Champion in 2013, she remains passionate about traditional techniques and now creates sculptural work using natural materials from her garden. Tim Johnson has spent over 25 years exploring the relationship between material, place, nature and culture through basketry, sculpture, textiles, performance and more. Combining tradition with innovation, he now works near Barcelona, Spain.
