Folk Craft and Everyday Culture: From Plant to Fibre
By Rachel Attfield
Join artist and cultural producer Rachel Attfield for a hands-on workshop exploring plants, everyday culture and material knowledge through simple folk craft techniques, including cordage, plaiting, knotting and random weave.
Beginning with a display of plants, fibres, woven samples and craft objects, participants are invited to see materials at different stages of transformation. The display shows how raw plant materials can become functional forms such as rope, baskets and nets, and how practical making skills connect people to local landscapes, domestic life and shared cultural knowledge.
Through conversation, shared reflection, garden exploration and collective making, participants will experiment with natural materials and explore how everyday skills carry stories about ecology, labour, memory and place.
Participants will create a small plant-based sample, such as cordage or a simple woven form, to take away.
Suitable for complete beginners. No previous craft experience needed.
