Ply-Split braiding

Julie is an experienced weaver, braidmaker and teacher who has been researching and developing the Indian technique of Ply-Split Braiding since 1991 to make wearable and sculptural pieces, working mainly in linen or cotton yarn. Her work has been exhibited in the UK, Europe, USA and Japan, and she has written 4 books on Ply-Split Braiding . The course will focus on‘Ply-Splitting in Three Dimensions’. The versatility of ply-splitting makes it an ideal technique with which to explore three-dimensional forms. Using 4 ply cords, you will be able to work in the scale and yarn of your choice to make vessels, dishes, or sculptural pieces. You will also learn about cord making using a variety of yarn.

Anna is an Edinburgh based basketmaker, who grows and cuts her own willow. She teaches extensively in the city and beyond and sells her work in galleries around Scotland, and , through her online presence , around the world. Anna has also been the basketry tutor at Poldrate Arts and Crafts Centre since 2014, where she teaches one of the few progressive willow basketmaking courses in the UK. Passionate about environmental issues, local materials and traditional basketmaking, she has recently won a Craft Scotland’s Established Maker Programme Award in order to develop new courses and skills.

Anna will teach a log basket based on a traditional one-bushel basket, with the addition of a foot border. She will bring her own organically grown Scottish willows for students to use in the sidings, and they will have the opportunity to experiment with colour and with various weaves, to work with larger willows, and to develop and improve their skills with borders and twisted rod handles.

Suitability : for those who have some willow making experience.
Cost of materials: Approximately £15

Course fee – £275 including meals and accommodation. Three bursaries of £150 are available (two years continuous membership required).

Westhope Craft College is located in the beautiful South Shropshire Hills. Please let us know if you are coming by train and will need a lift from Craven Arms station.
