…that the tough stringy bark obtained by stripping willow is an excellent material for tying objects? It was once so important in commercial vineyards for tying up grapevines that grape growers were encouraged to grow one acre of willows for every 25 acres of vineyard. One early writer sounded the note of caution that the farmer who could not grow his own willows (and reeds) had better stay out of the vineyard business…’
