‘Mr. Reg Skinner, who is new in his seventies, recalls that just before his 13th birthday his mother arranged that he should start work at Horningsea osier holt. He was allowed to leave school on his thirteenth birthday providing the headmaster agreed that his attendance had been satisfactory. So with the headmaster’s agreement he walked from Fen Ditton to Horningsea to start work at 6 a.m. One of his jobs was to give 2d tickets to the women when they had stripped a bundle of osiers. The bundle was measured by a 22″ long piece of string tied 6″ up from the butt end…’
