Join Hilary Burns MBE, Yeoman of the Worshipful Company of Basketmakers, and heritage craft specialist Flo Hamer for a rare insight into the almost-lost technique of scuttle-work basketry.

Using cleft and shaved slats of ash, oak, or chestnut, over-woven with willow, scuttle-work baskets were once essential tools in agricultural grain processing—especially the iconic winnowing fan. With roots in Roman Britain, this intricate craft disappeared in the UK around the 1930s.

Hilary is one of the only professional basketmakers in the UK researching and reviving this technique. Flo Hamer, who recently trained with Hilary, works with endangered and heritage crafts using traditional tools and methods. Her practice—spanning green woodworking to basketry—is driven by a deep love of making and a commitment to keeping traditional skills
alive.
Don’t miss this chance to discover a forgotten tradition and meet the makers bringing it back to life.
