50th Anniversary – Owen Jones and Lorna Singleton in conversation
By The Basketmakers' AssociationCome and join us for a fascinating evening to hear Owen and Lorna talking about their friendship, shared love of swill making and Heritage Craft.
Owen Jones was taught to make swills in 1988 by a retired ‘Swiller’ from Broughton-in-Furness, called John Barker. John served his time in a 1930’s swillshop and when Owen met
him he was one of the last swillers from that generation who was still making them.
Lorna Singleton grew up in Cumbria and is passionate about the environment and its heritage. After university and looking to move back to the countryside Lorna signed up for a three-year apprenticeship in coppicing and woodland crafts with the Bill Hogarth MBE Memorial Apprenticeship Trust in 2010. Before starting the apprenticeship, she attended a swill basket-making workshop with Owen Jones, and although she didn’t realise then, ‘the die was cast’.
