This fascinating exhibition tells the story of seven basketmakers and their tutor, Lorna Singleton, as they immerse themselves in ancient Lake District woodland and the historic world of spelk basketry.
Wood Water Weave is a unique 12-month course where participants embed themselves in the seasonal cycles of the forest and develop their traditional basketmaking skills. They learn the alchemy of turning locally coppiced trees into jaw-droppingly beautiful baskets, cutting and preparing the wood by hand, preserving the heritage skills of generations of basketmakers and woodland workers.
Explore the work of these committed craftspeople as they boil oak, split hazel and pound ash, interweaving the stories of the trees with stories of creative discovery, friendship and connection with the natural world.
The exhibition is generously supported by the Worshipful Company of Basketmakers, Heritage Crafts, and Forestry England.
