Course details

This workshop will focus on the art of Neolithic braiding.

Those new to Neolithic braiding will get to grips with the weave by making a sampler which will take the form of a small mat or table runner and then move on to a side bag with leather straps or a “rooted” style basket.

For those with experience of Neolithic braiding wishing to expand their knowledge, there will be an option to make a standing basket on legs or a sculptural piece of your own design.

You will be using hemp or jute rope for your projects but those students wishing to explore this weave further may bring their own materials; any rope, thick or thin, paper threads, or linen twines etc, to work with.

Suitability: all levels
Material costs:  £10 – £50 depending on materials and projects chosen, or bring your own.

Your tutor

Lisa has been basketmaking since 2016.  Having completed the 2-year City Lit Basketry course in 2019 she went on to win the Worshipful Company and Cockpit Arts Award 2021 and now teaches at the City Lit.

Connection to materials and exploring the possibilities they hold within is key to Lisa’s creative process.  She is keen for you to practice the Neolithic Braiding technique and make it your own.  So, if you have a favourite material you like to work with or some favourite sticks or foraged items, do bring them along.

There are three £300 bursaries available for the Autumn School.  Please click here for more information and to apply online.  Please also note that you need to purchase a ticket before you apply.
