BA Spring School 2023: Fishing Creel
By Eddie Glew
-
Harrogate Ladies' College, Clarence Drive, Harrogate, UK
Creels were traditionally used by fishermen to catch fish and shellfish and to carry their catch. Those for carrying were worn on their back or shoulder.
These lidded willow baskets with leather straps are made using a myriad of techniques from hinged lids and loops to scalloming, framework and traditional English staking-up. In Eddie’s words “this basket is a proverbial Swiss army knife of skills to help you on your basket making journey”.
Suitability: Intermediate and experienced makers (not suitable for beginners)
Cost of materials: approximately £15-£20 per creel for the willow plus the cost of any leather used
