BA Spring School 2023: Looping and String Making Techniques

In this workshop you will explore these ancient  technologies and create baskets with a variety of soft materials and looping structures.  Tim will bring bags and baskets from his collection of artefacts the handling of which will encourage both the close analysis of structure and further experimentation with material and structure combinations.  Materials will include rush, esparto grass and cyperus stems.

Participants will make 2-3 finished pieces using a variety of looping techniques including simple looping, looping around a core, cross knit looping and camel looping. And a selection of samples.  You will also look at several ways to prepare the materials for looping and cordage-making including beating, combing and splitting techniques.
