BA Spring School 2024: Twining – exploring surfaces and enclosed forms
By Mary CrabbMary, one of the contributing basketmakers to the Forces in Translation research project, will be teaching twined pod forms. She will teach the basics of the technique, with a focus on working with textile materials. The course will include the teaching of a range of bases, methods for varying form and alternatives for finishing the top edges.
This course will focus on the making of a decorative non-functional twined pod form. Students will begin with a series of exercises learning or revising how to work with simple twining to weave a set of samples for bases. They will then explore form through the addition and subtraction of warps, surfaces and simple colour patterns. Students will then be invited to design their own pod form: selecting a base, choosing materials and applying skills learnt on previous days.
Suitability: Beginners and intermediate makers. Please note that the work is small and can be tiring on the eyes.
Cost of materials: £20-£30
