BA Spring School 2024: Working with Esparto
By Simone Simons
-
Harrogate Ladies' College, Clarence Drive, Harrogate, UK
Simone, who is resident in Spain, will be giving students the opportunity to work with this grass found in Spain and Portugal.
Traditionally the main technique used is braiding – diagonal and continuous. During the course students will learn to braid “pleitas”, long bands in different widths, using 3 or up to 15 bundles in the diagonal braiding technique. The next step is learning to sew the bands together with a needle and string with the so-called invisible stitch, and other stitching techniques, to transform them into a basket/bag or another desired piece.
Every student will make one medium basket/bag and if there is time some flat sample piece.
Suitability: All levels
Cost of materials: to be confirmed
