On this two-day course we will work with ‘flat band cane’ to learn the basic principles of hexagonal plaiting/weaving.  This is a good material to use to make a first basket. You will learn how to weave a flat sheet of hexagonal plaiting forming the base of your basket. You’ll learn where to place and turn corners moving from 2D to 3D, to create a basket form, weaving up the sides, and finally a simple method of finishing off the border.

On day two, with a basic understanding of the principles of hexagonal plaiting, there will be several options to choose from – these might include working with a different material, working on a different scale, making a different shaped form/basket, repeating what you made on day one consolidate/improve on what learned …… there will be several options on offer to choose from. There will be examples of hexagonally plaited basketry for you to observe and photograph, books to browse through which have sections about hexagonal plaiting and how it’s used traditionally around the world, and also how more contemporary makers are using hexagonal plaiting in their work.
