‘Invisible Stitch’
By Jenny Paine & Tim Johnson
Braided and stitched rush baskets in the Mediterranean tradition.
4 – 6 September at Sages, Dolton, Devon.
In Spain and North Africa palm leaves and esparto grass are commonly woven into long lengths of braid and stitched together to make a wide variety of functional items, these baskets have been made since ancient Egyptian times and the tradition continues today. Related to the English rush braiding tradition, Mediterranean basketmakers use a wider variety of braid patterns and uses a distinctive stitching technique that interlocks the braid edges creating a seamless fabric.
