Leather Straps and Handles
By Sue Kirk & Justin Capp
A one day (fact finding and practical) workshop for basketmakers to learn about leather straps and handle options for their baskets. In this workshop you will spend the morning learning how to cut and burnish straps and go on to learn some braiding and plaiting options for decorative effect. Learn how to approach different ways of fitting (like splicing around an upright) and how to choose the right area on your basket for strength and stability. Learn fixing options like copper rivet, screwed bolts and whip stitching options.
In the second part of the day you can explore making a pair of handles or a longer shoulder strap for your basket (not buckle, just braided and fixed). Go home with a completed handle on the basket you have brought with you.
Cost £100 9.30am – 4.30pm. (8 students) Suitable for all abilities. BRING A BASKET TO WORK ON.
