Make a Mell doll and straw harvest tokens

Learn about the humble material of straw and how it can be used to make decorative and functional objects. Straw skills have been practiced for hundreds of years in farming and folk crafts around the world in celebration of harvest and fertility. Straw work and Corn Dolly making are both Red Listed Endangered Crafts after falling out of mainstream practice due to the mechanisation of crop harvesting.

During this taster event you will learn how to prepare the straw along with some basic plaiting skills. Taking inspiration from the wonderful setting of the Peace Oak Orchard you will learn how to make harvest knots and a traditional Mell Doll harvest trophy using a variety of techniques.

Please bring an apron and an apple to make your Mell Doll, all other materials will be provided.

Suitable for all levels although some hand dexterity is required. Age 10 plus, all under 16 must be accompanied by a paying adult.
