Nature Woven into Contemporary Practice

Discover Nature Woven into Contemporary Practice at Court Barn Museum, Chipping Campden – an exhibition celebrating the rich dialogue between natural materials, skilled hands, and contemporary craft.

This showcase brings together five accomplished women artist-makers – Rosie Farey, Penny Maltby (Ministry of Straw), Rebecca Small, Rachel Harwood and Clare Shilvock (Warwickshire Willow) – whose practices are rooted in traditional techniques and shaped by deep knowledge of their materials. Working with home-grown willow, flax, rush and straw, they transform raw, fibres into baskets, vessels, sculpture and finely detailed works.

At the heart of the exhibition is process. Visitors are invited to look beyond the finished pieces to understand the journey of each material – from harvesting and preparation through to making – with displays of raw fibres, tools and works in progress offering a rare insight into these often unseen stages. The exhibition reveals how time, seasonality and place are embedded in each object, connecting contemporary practice to enduring craft traditions.

Alongside this, a selection of beautifully crafted finished works will be available to purchase.

The exhibition is free to visit. A small admission fee applies to the museum’s permanent collection, which celebrates the Arts & Crafts movement and local design history, including C.R. Ashbee’s Guild of Handicraft, with displays of 20th-century metalwork, furniture and jewellery.
