Welsh Cyntell course with Sarah Hatton
By Hatton Willow
Join this hands-on two day Welsh Cyntell basket course and explore the art of traditional Welsh basketry. Participants will learn about the history and cultural significance of the iconic Cyntell basket, its traditional uses, and the techniques passed down through generations.
The course begins with preparing willow rods, including soaking, softening, and selecting the right size and quality for different parts of the basket, ensuring a strong and durable finished piece. Under the guidance of tutor Sarah Hatton, participants will master the fundamental weaving techniques needed to craft a Cyntell basket.
The course covers attaching the ribs to the hoop, weaving with different lengths of willow, and splitting and shaping rods to complete the basket. By the end of the two-day course, each participant will have created their own handwoven Cyntell basket and gained the confidence and skills to continue weaving independently.
Held at Nantgarw China Works Museum, Cardiff, between 7th and 8th March 2026 from 10:00am to 4:30pm, the course costs £190. All materials and tools are provided, and participants take home everything they make, though packed lunch and refreshments are required.
Sarah Hatton, a Caerphilly-based willow grower and basket maker, brings extensive experience, including high-profile commissions and teaching traditional and creative willow weaving in a welcoming, hands-on environment.
