Willow Basketry Workshop with Rachel Hutton

Join Rachel Hutton at Lady Margaret Hall in the beautiful Welbeck countryside for a beginner-friendly workshop to weave your own foraging basket inspired by traditional English basketry techniques.

In the workshop you will reinterpret traditional weaving styles to create a contemporary basket perfect for gardening or foraging. You will start from a plywood base, which will allow more time to cover other techniques including: pull down wale, continuous rope weave, working with leather (including cutting, punching and riveting), behind 2 border or trac border (depending on time and experience), and trimming and tidying your basket.

An adult session (ages 18+), the workshop is perfect for complete beginners, or those who have tried basic round work baskets and want to improve their weaving style and control. While no prior experience is necessary, the workshop is physically demanding, so a good degree of manual dexterity is required.

The workshop accompanies the Basketry: Rescuing, Reviving, Retaining exhibition at the Harley Gallery. The exhibition forms part of the continued work of the Basketmakers’ Association’s Traditional Basketry Project supported by the The Worshipful Company of Basketmakers and delivered in partnership with Heritage Crafts.
