Harley Young Artists: Willow Weaving with Rachel Hutton
By The Harley GallerySpend an afternoon working with professional basketmaker Rachel Hutton and weave your own wall hanging using willow, dried flowers and other natural materials.
In this workshop, young people aged 11-16 will learn traditional weaving techniques, using a style inspired by Catalonian platters – the same type of weave often used as the base of a basket.
Starting in the Harley Gallery, young people will take inspiration from the huge variety of baskets on display in the Basketry: Rescuing, Reviving, Retaining exhibition. Heading outside (weather dependent), you will learn how to choose and prepare willow, then experiment with pattern, texture, and colour to weave a finished wall hanging that reflects your own creative style.
The Harley Young Artists series gives young people a chance to work with professional artists. It is an opportunity to develop skills and gain an insight into a range of creative careers.
